It includes the study of adhesion, friction, lubrication, and wear. In the last decades, tribology has become a highly <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>interdisciplinary field<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, which attracts attention from physicists, chemists, engineers, materials scientists, and biologists.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"it-IT\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> The <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>renewed interest in tribology<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> has been fueled by several factors, among which\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">the advent of new experimental and computational techniques that opened the way to for<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>fundamental studies on the origin of friction<\/b><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">, and an\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">increased attention<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> to the <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><b>enormous adverse effects of friction on global energy loss and the environment.<\/b><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"it-IT\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #000000; font-size: 12pt;\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">We apply computational methods to both investigate fundamental mechanisms in tribology and design materials to reduce friction.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p lang=\"it-IT\"><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section #000000;\">Relevant information on the adhesion and resistance of sliding of an interface can be obtained by the analysis of the <strong>potential energy surface (PES)<\/strong> that describes the surface adhesion during sliding \u00a0[<a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/0953-8984\/19\/30\/305008\/meta\"><span style=\"color: #bb2e29;\">12<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/la200783a\"><span style=\"color: #bb2e29;\">22<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aps.org\/prb\/abstract\/10.1103\/PhysRevB.86.245434\"><span style=\"color: #bb2e29;\">27<\/span><\/a>]. For example, we predicted a pressure-induced friction collapse in systems with an anticorrugating PES [<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aps.org\/prl\/abstract\/10.1103\/PhysRevLett.99.176101\"><span style=\"color: #bb2e29;\">14<\/span><\/a>]. And identified the collective atomistic mechanisms that trig the <strong>onset of frictional slip<\/strong>, which we described as a <strong>nucleation process <\/strong>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/107\/4\/1311.short\"><span style=\"color: #bb2e29;\">19<\/span><\/a>]. We also showed that <strong>shrinking the size <\/strong>of a body in contact with a substrate increases its commensurability and resistance to sliding [<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/-\/content\/articlelanding\/2016\/cp\/c6cp05386f#!divAbstract\"><span style=\"color: #bb2e29;\">40<\/span><\/a>].<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">We unraveled the fundamental nature of adhesive and friction forces by correlating them with the electronic charge displacements at the interface of two mating surfaces [<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.aps.org\/prl\/abstract\/10.1103\/PhysRevLett.121.026804\"><span style=\"color: #bb2e29;\">50<\/span><\/a>].<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">The function of many lubricant materials is to reduce interfacial adhesion.
