interfaces<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c0ebd65 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c0ebd65\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Due to the wide number of possible homogeneous and heterogeneous solid interfaces of interest for tribology, it is convenient to employ <strong>automatic workflows<\/strong> able to screen the physical properties of all these materials. Among the most relevant properties, the <strong>potential energy surface<\/strong> (PES), the <strong>charge displacement<\/strong>, and the <strong>shear strength<\/strong> provide essential insights on the tribological behavior of the different interfaces. Automatic workflows, like the one implemented in our group, are capable to calculate the most important figures of merit of hundreds of different solid-solid interfaces [<span style=\"color: #bb2e29;\"><a style=\"color: #bb2e29;\" title=\"Ideal adhesive and shear strengths of solid interfaces: A high throughput ab initio approach\" materials and tribochemistry<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a5913f4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a5913f4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">The lubricant materials currently employed to reduce friction can be divided in <strong>solid lubricants<\/strong>, active in dry conditions, and <strong>lubricant additives<\/strong>, included in a liquid medium. In our group we study by means of first principles simulations the tribological properties of these materials and their interactions with the substrates. First principles simulations are particularly suited for this task because they can accurately describe all the degrees that are necessary to correctly model <strong>tribochemical reactions<\/strong>, i.e. the chemical reactions occurring in the presence of mechanical stresses. We study <strong>carbon-based materials<\/strong> [<a title=\"A fundamental mechanism for carbon-film lubricity identified by means of ab initio molecular dynamics\" verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">To reduce the computational effort associated to fully ab initio molecular dynamics, which can accurately describe tribochemical reactions, <strong>hybrid schemes<\/strong> can be adopted. The quantum mechanics\/molecular mechanics (<strong>QM\/MM<\/strong>) approach we have recently adopted allows<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">to focus the computational power on the portion of the system where the chemical reactions occur and<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">where the high accuracy is needed, without spending unnecessary resources on the portion of the system where the details of the electronic structure are not needed. This approach has been proven successful to describe the <strong>tribochemistry of water at the graphene edges<\/strong> [<span style=\"color: #bb2e29;\"><a style=\"color: #bb2e29;\" title=\"Quantum Mechanics\/Molecular Mechanics (QM\/MM) applied to tribology: Real-time monitoring of tribochemical reactions of water at graphene edges\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.commatsci.2019.109400\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1<\/a>,<a style=\"color: #bb2e29;\" title=\"Monitoring water and oxygen splitting at graphene edges and folds: Insights into the lubricity of graphitic materials\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.carbon.2019.09.040\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2<\/a><\/span>] and <strong>MoDTC additives<\/strong> [<a title=\"Tribochemical Reactions of MoDTC Lubricant Additives with Iron by Quantum Mechanics\/Molecular Mechanics Simulations\" href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1021\/acs.jpcc.0c02211\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #bb2e29;\">3<\/span><\/a>].<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Furthermore, high forces must be dissipated during sliding. This is most often achieved by phonons. <strong>Green\u2019s functions molecular dynamics<\/strong> (GFMD) simulations and the relevant theory have been proven successful to overcome the limitation of finite-size simulations system, in which <strong>phononic dissipation<\/strong> cannot be easily represented.
