The principal investigator is Prof. Maria Clelia Righi. The activities started on November the 1st 2020. The goal of the project is to port material design paradigm based on first principles material discovery to the field of tribology to advance the study of solid interfaces and design materials to reduce friction.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-243ac79 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"243ac79\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-2637756\" data-id=\"2637756\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-670522c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"670522c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">Friction and wear result in massive energy and environmental costs. By <strong>improving tribology technologies, a huge amount of energy could be saved<\/strong>, with a corresponding reduction in fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Tribology technologies are nowadays based entirely on materials. Improving lubricant materials is not an easy task, as their function is governed by atomistic processes that occur at the buried sliding interface, which is very difficult to monitor in real time by experiments. Simulations can play a crucial role here, in particular those based on a quantum mechanical approach, which is essential for an accurate description of the chemical reactions occurring conditions of enhanced reactivity imposed by the mechanical stresses applied.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #000000;\">The goal of SLIDE is to port the most advanced paradigms for materials modeling and design into the field of tribology and perform:<\/p>\n<ol type=\"i\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><em>In silico<\/em> experiments to <strong>advance lubricants<\/strong>. SLIDE will focus, in particular, on the development of environmentally friendly alternatives to commercial additives used in engine oils;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; color: #000000;\"><strong>High-throughput screening<\/strong> of the adhesion and shear strength of <strong>solid interfaces<\/strong>.
